Kat Collins is an author, freelance writer/editor, blogger, and artist currently based in Pennsylvania. She is passionate about writing creative nonfiction, considered the “fourth genre,” that fuses nonfiction, memoir, and journalistic reporting to create literary pieces. Kat loves sharing tips, tricks, and how to write creative nonfiction whether through her blog, workshops, or speaking engagements.
Kat holds a BA with a concentration in Fine Arts and a minor in Psychology, from Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Ohio. With her interests spanning art, travel, psychology, spirituality, culinary, women’s health, and socio-cultural issues, Kat’s freelance writing portfolio is varied. Currently you can see her work in the Summer 2012 Still Point Arts Quarterly and later this Fall in Culture magazine. Kat’s work has been published on websites and by a small poetry journal. She has designed and written several publicity pieces, ad copy, promotional materials, newsletters, website copy, and more for non-profits. In 2003, she co-wrote (and acted in) a small comedy play for a dinner theater, titled Kumbaya.
A prolific blogger, Kat has over 10 years blogging experience. She writes two blogs in addition to Kat-Collins.com, which is about writing creative-nonfiction and her journey as a writer. These include The Good Wife: Escaping The Shadows of Expectations, her memoir blog, and The Cheese and Mouse, a blog about the culinary world of cheese. She previously blogged at Warrior Child (now defunct).
As an artist, Kat’s work has been displayed at the Mansfield Art Gallery (Ohio), Mt. Vernon Nazarene University Art Gallery (Ohio), Bethlehem Juried Art Exhibition (Pennsylvania), and on the walls in homes. In 2003, Kat hand-painted a life-size fiberglass mule commissioned by the Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce (PA). It was part of a larger project, “Miles of Mules,” which was a public art project designed to couple the beauty of art with the richness of history along the Delaware and Lehigh canals. Subsequently, the artwork and commentary was published in a coffee table book which you can purchase at the National Canal Museum Store. Kat has completed several commissioned pieces for a variety of occasions, and continues to do so.
Kat is a member of the National Association of Memoir Writers and the Greater Lehigh Valley Writer’s Group.
In addition, Kat is an inspirational speaker empowering women to have a voice and not be the “silent partner” or live “under the shadow of expectations.” Through her writing and speaking, Kat offers human potential, personal and spiritual growth and practical tools from a Christian perspective, although her work spans religious lines and is pertinent to people of all faiths and spiritual traditions. She focuses on helping women live their lives fully, increase their self-respect and self-worth, and manifest their desires and purpose in life.
As for a few interesting personal tidbits…Kat lives in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania with her partner and two spoiled rotten cats named Nittany and Taz. And yes, the name Nittany is from the Penn State Nittany Lions football team. Kat’s a bit of a fanatic. (Pittsburgh Steelers, too.) She loves to cook (and eat) and likes to throw five-course gourmet dinners for her friends. Kat is a voracious reader and will read everything and anything, even the back of cereal boxes. Lastly, shopping should be her middle name (it’s excellent therapy).
